1 couple, 1 doctor

"The Howards have between them so many health challenges that they could easily have been among those seniors who constantly revolve in and out of emergency rooms, hospitals and rehab facilities en route to nursing homes.
...
And part of the reason, Dr. DeJonge is convinced, is that both spouses see the same physician. He visits them at home, with follow-up visits by nurse practitioners and, when necessary, social workers. (I’ll say more about housecalls, an old idea made new again, in a future post.) “It really helps me care for each individual by caring for the whole. They almost become a single unit,” he said in an interview."

Caregivers: Help Needed

Among respondents to the 2009 Caregiving in the U.S. study, 78% expressed the need for help or more information in at least one of fourteen topics related to caregiving. Keeping their family members safe
at home (37%), managing their own stress (34%), identifying easy activities to do with their loved ones (34%), and finding time for themselves (32%) were the most often identified needs.

Grandparent Nation

Nearly one out of every four people in the U.S. is a grandparent. This number, 70 million, is more than the number of people in France, and is twice the population of California. Today’s American grandparents are active and energetic. The average age at which someone becomes a grandparent is 48, and many of them are running marathons or dating online.

Kinnexxus: Connecting Your Senior Ecosystem™

Adheretx

AdhereTx Corp provides web-based, intelligent monitoring and management solutions to improve the quality and reduce the cost of care in patients with chronic conditions including hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and other disease states. The solution is optimized for patients with multiple chronic conditions and the most complex therapeutic regimens. It enables patients or their proxies to self report information about their medications and “observations of daily living” (ODL) behaviors, as well as to capture biometric monitoring data (e.g. blood pressure). A rules engine makes sense of this data to provide feedback to both patient and health care provider. The patient receives tailored, automated coaching and can be profiled for appropriate therapeutic interventions; the provider is given heuristic information to enable them to adjust medications and therapies on a timely basis to achieve goals for treatment and avoid potentially serious and costly complications.

The New Population Bomb: The Four Megatrends That Will Change the World

By Jack A. Goldstone

Summary:

A series of looming demographic trends will greatly affect international security in the twenty-first century. How policymakers adjust to these changes now will determine the course of global political and economic stability for years to come.

Four Megatrends:

  • A drop in the rich world’s population relative to the developing world’s;
  • Aging populations in developed countries;
  • An increase in undereducated, unemployed youth in developing (especially Muslim) countries; and
  • The rise of overcrowded megacities in the developing world.

Third World as Retirement Home

NY Times: Idea of the Day
Because of uneven global population trends, old people in the future might be encouraged to move from aging rich countries to high-fertility developing nations with the medical and other workers to support their needs.

Para Fuera

Written and directed by Nicholas Jasenovec.

A portrait of Dr. Richard J. Bing on his hundredth birthday.

After being awarded the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival for his much beloved feature film debut 'Paper Heart,' Nicholas Jasenovec returns this year with this delightful short documentary of an exceptional man turning 100-years-old. Shortly before his centennial birthday celebration, the film's subject, Dr. Richard S. Bing, learned of the Bing search engine and wrote a letter to Microsoft about his life and upcoming milestone. Jasenovec, who was at work scripting a feature with writing partner Bill Hader, was asked to meet with the man, and instantly knew he wanted to make a short about Dr. Bing. When asked if there's anything he wishes to pass on to the film's audiences, Dr. Bing provides these words of wisdom: "Sometimes a ripe fruit has more flavor than one straight from the tree!"
